I've had a fascination with wings for a long time. This video shows the creation of the wings, then there's an image created from them below. The beauty of this setup is that I can make an infinite amount of looks with these wings, below is just the first. It's a bit of a departure from my usual work, but then we all must spread our wings a little to grow. I hope you enjoy it!

Ovarian Cancer Survivors Makeover Transformations | Fun Day Out | www.zphotog.net http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2016/8/ovarian-cancer-survivors-makeover-transformations-fun-day-out-www-zphotog-net These six lovely Ovarian Cancer Survivors came to the studio to have a photo shoot. Cancer can strip you of a lot of things, and sometimes as a woman, it may take from you that person you used to be. The one who was carefree, lighthearted, and felt beautiful while she was out and about in the world. We wanted to connect these ladies to that feeling again. I hope you will watch and share as there are many other ladies out there in the world that may be feeling down, not feeling pretty, and we want to show them that beauty that they might have lost touch with. These transformations are a little on the outside sure, but when you look at an image of yourself and see that beauty that others see you, sometimes that transformation happens on the inside too. Because you feel you've lost that piece of yourself to cancer, age, or just plain life. We want all women to feel the way we believe these women did after their photo shoot, watch and see, and if you know someone that needs this, please reach out.

Photo Shoot in Milk Bath with Before and After Editing | Memphis Portrait Photographer http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/12/photo-shoot-in-milk-bath-with-before-and-after-editing-memphis-portrait-photographer Recently I was asked to send a copy of my best image out for a promotional piece. This is one of the harder questions you can ask of a portrait photographer, we (or at least I) tend to fall in love with at least one image from every shoot we do. However, there are definitely some favorites in my body of work, and they often tend to be the more creatively styled shoots that I do.

The piece will be used to highlight why someone would hire me to photograph them in Paris in April of 2016. Or at least entice them to want to look more at the rest of work to decide if having a photo shoot with me would be worth the investment to be fly to Paris and have me photograph them! So after a look at the portfolio on my website, I settled on an image and went to my editing program to have a final look. While there, I noticed that there were other images I had taken from that particular shoot that I had passed over at the time. However, with some time and distance from them, a saw some new potential. So I pulled together a new image from the old work and thought I would share that and the editing process I took to get there in case you were curious how an image like this ends up an image like this!

The process:

Starting at the top left with the unedited image, you can see I felt that the hand was a little large. Because I was using a 50mm lens, there was some distortion on the edge of the frame that made her hand appear larger than it is. I could simply remove it, but I didn't like leaving her armless, it definitely looked off! Following to the right, you'll see the image that I borrowed and arm from and then added one frame over to the right. I also felt like a crown of sorts was forming around her head with the foliage, so I added some more red flowers (also borrowed from another image) and layered more on. And I thought the head tilt would look more "regal" to fit with the crown of flowers by rotating it to the left.

On the bottom row, I went through color changes to warm up her skin tone and began layering on textures. I felt the glare of the lights in the water was drawing the eye away from my beautiful subject, so I also toned that down, and lastly I added on another 4-5 textures until I felt it was complete. Here is the final image, let me know what you think!

And if you're interested in booking your own photo shoot with me in Paris, please reach out for more details!

The final image:

And the original image being used for the purposes I mentioned at the top can be found here:

Maternity Photo Session with a Fine Art twist | Portrait Photographer Bartlett, TN http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/10/maternity-photo-session-with-a-fine-art-twist-portrait-photographer-bartlett-tn Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life, it is a time to bask in that special glow that women have while awaiting the arrival of their bundle of joy! Of course many women just feel big and uncomfortable, but for a photo session, we take time to make it a special celebration that captures this once in a lifetime moment unique to each child you have. The session allows everything to melt away and leaves you with just the memory of the beautiful portraits created before baby meets the world!

Here are a few from Nicole's session. The reason Nicole chose Tammy from Z Photog Studio to photograph her is because she wanted her session to have a fine art flair. This truly makes the portraits produced unique. She requested a milk bath with flowers, and Tammy provided an idea for a tree of life image as well. Have a look below at some of my favorites from the session and let me know what you think!

First beautiful mom...

And a Mom and Dad....

And for the bath....

And my favorite of the bath shots:

And lastly the "Tree of Life"

To book your own maternity or regular portrait session, please reach out to Tammy at 901-500-5841 to schedule your complimentary consultation!

Insurance Agent Extraordinaire Michelle Wilson | Z Photog Studio Bartlett, TN | Photographer http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/7/insurance-agent-extraordinaire-michelle-wilson-z-photog-studio-bartlett-tn-photographer I love it when I get to photograph someone that I already have a relationship with, and in this case one of trust. Meet Michelle, she is the owner of Michelle Wilson State Farm. I switched my service some time ago to Michelle, because I got to know her as a person. When I moved to the area and was buying a house, I needed insurance, so I simply did an online search and got bids from several agencies. After six years with that company I signed up with online I met Michelle. We were talking about who my agent was at that agency, and I realized I had no idea. I had never met the person, talked to them, or consulted with them on anything. They were simply an entity out in space that sent me a bill each month.

I realized that the other company didn't really deserve my business. I pride myself on creating an experience for my clients when they come to see me. We become friends through the process because they aren't just numbers to me, they are people. And people deserve to be cared for, which I wasn't getting at my existing company, I deserved more. So I moved all my insurance over to Michelle and have been extremely pleased with the personal attention we've been given. And it's not only Michelle, but the people she's hired to work for her as well. They all treat you with respect and follow through to make you feel like you matter.

So all that said, here are a few of my favorite shots from the session. We did both business and personal, here are a few of each! And if you need a good insurance person that cares about you, let me know and I'd be happy to introduce you!

Mother Daughters Glamour Photo Shoot Video | Bartlett, Memphis, TN Portrait Photographer http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/7/mother-daughters-glamour-photo-shoot-bartlett-memphis-tn-portrait-photographer We all had so much fun during this photo shoot! There's just something so special about working with mother's and their daughter's to create beautiful images, because it's more than that, it's the shared experience that is now forever documented.  As the photographer though the special part is getting to bear witness to those moments as I photograph them which is priceless.  But you know what they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so have a peek here at this beautiful session video with my most recent mother daughter duo, Anna and Rachel. :)

Mother Daughters Shoot with Missing Daughter | Bartlett, Memphis, TN Portrait Photographer http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/6/mother-daughters-shoot-with-missing-daughter-bartlett-memphis-tn-portrait-photographer If you ask me what my favorite shoot is to do, I would tell you that it would be a mother and her daughters. There's something about freezing time for families and leaving memories of that special bond that strikes to my core. In this particular shoot, I was given a challenge I hadn't had before, mom lives locally but her two daughters live in another country. And each was coming to visit separately. When mom asked if it was possible to have them all in one image together, I had my reservations, but I set them up for two shoots and hoped for the best!

We did three different setups and this was by far my most favorite, what do you think?!

I especially enjoyed when I showed Jenny (mom) the final images and when she looked at this one she had forgotten that they all weren't in the room together! What a set of beauties right!

We also did some individual shots of all three ladies, here's a sampling:

And one of my favorite business portraits taken for Kim (she's an architect):

If you would like to create your own special memories with your girls, or have your own beauty portraits made, please have a look around at the rest of my website and feel free to reach out for more information.

Behind the Scenes of Portrait Startup with Sue Bryce on Creative Live | Memphis Photographer http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/6/behind-the-scenes-of-portrait-startup-with-sue-bryce-on-creative-live Over the past year I have been a Mentor in a Facebook group of over 22,000 photographers (and growing) in support of the amazing photographer Sue Bryce's Glamour revolution. Due to that mentorship, over the last week I have had the great pleasure to be able to share how I've taken Sue's teachings and made them my own as I developed my own business. Myself and the other mentors in the group were invited to participate in a class on Creative Live in Seattle to share our personal stories in the hopes that we might help someone out there understand that we are just like them, and that with hard work, persistence, and passion all things are possible!

I own countless classes from http://www.creativelive.com, but I had never been able to be a part of a live class in studio. I decided to document my days there and time with Sue and the other mentors with some images to give others like me that might not ever get to experience attending a class there a little flavor of the experience. It was also so exciting to meet the folks on cL that I've been watching for a few years now such as Kenna Klosterman and Russ Andes. Kenna is about the nicest person you'll ever meet, and she has a phenomenal talent which she channels into her host role. We got to see her in action this week as things did not go exactly as planned!

When we arrived the day before the class would start, we discovered that Sue had not been feeling well. She managed to power through Day One with great gusto providing us all with new inspiration. She had a jam packed day of content for Day Two, but awoke in the morning to discover that her voice was only a mere whisper at full power, so a little bit of a dilemma! So Sue asked three of us (myself, Emily, and Nikki) about 30 minutes before we went live to stand in her place on stage. In a testament to her ability to educate, she sat with Kenna and orchestrated the class through us and the other mentors voices for Day Two.

We told our stories, trials, tribulations, and most importantly shared our successes via her whisper of a voice that resonated none the less from ours and Kenna's mouths. Our audience was able to see that all nine of the mentors had come from a place very similar to them in one way or another and rise to build our own portrait studios and grow our own businesses.

So without further adieu I give you the behind the scenes to give you a little flavor of our experience at Creative Live!

I hope you enjoyed this look behind the scenes! For more details on Photography Mentoring, please email me at zphotogtammy@yahoo.com or call 901-500-5841.

Business Head Shots with Before and After Pictures | Memphis, TN Photographer | Portrait Photography http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/5/business-head-shots-are-fun-memphis-tn-photographer-portrait-photography When most people think of having their business head shots updated they don't necessarily think it will be a fun process. However we like to design all of our shoots to create an environment where you will not only get the best pictures of yourself you may have ever had, but also allow you to relax and enjoy the process too! Case in point, meet Joan. From these images of her before and during her shoot (below), I think that you can see that we had a fun time!

You can tell by her images that Joan's got a great personality, and that shines through in her career as a travel agency owner. If by the way you're interested in travel, I highly recommend her. Here's her website: http://www.mastercruiseplanners.com/, but you can book with her directly by calling 1-901-496-7832. She does cruises and also on land vacation travel packages. Just let her know where you want to go and she'll take care of you.

And here are two of the after images that Joan will be using. Today's digital world requires a good representation of yourself for social media and business. So here is a more casual one designed for social media:

And a more formal one for needs such as business cards, ads, speaking engagements, etc.

Joan was a career Navy gal in her past. (And yes this makes her a fabulous travel agent!). She wanted to keep her look polished but true to her style, so we worked with her to pick out clothing, hair, and makeup to get the look she wanted and I think she looks gorgeous! Let us know what you think too!

If you have a need to update your images to a more modern head shot portrait look, or want to do more on the personal or glamour side, please reach out to Tammy at Z Photog Studio in Bartlett to hear more! And have a look around the website here to see more of our work.

Memphis Southern Women's Show | Glamour Photo Shoot Winner | Z Photog Studio Bartlett, TN http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2015/3/southern-womens-show-winner At Z Photog Studio we specialize in working with women because we know that when asked most women feel like they can't have or haven't had a beautiful image of themselves in a long time, or sometimes even worse they tell me they are not photogenic. Well, we think that's a travesty as all women are beautiful, they just haven't been to the right photographer! What we do is work with you to get to know you and understand how you would like to be photographed, then craft a session to your unique style. If you don't believe we can deliver for you, have a look at our before and after page here for just a few results: http://www.zphotog.net/before-and-after. The wonderful thing we find though is that not only do you end up with beautiful images of yourself and the ladies in your life, but you rediscover that beautiful lady inside that everyone else sees, but you may have lost touch with. THAT is why I love what I do. :)

That said, we're excited that so many women entered to win a complimentary modern glamour photo shoot at the Southern Women's Show on the 13th-15th at the Agricenter in Memphis. We're excited to help you rediscover YOUR beauty! There were almost 200 entries, and I'm happy I got to meet most of you! If you are here you might have been notified that the winner has been chosen. So without further adieu, congratulations to the winner: Elaine Shankle!!

Elaine will be treated to a day of fun starting with a wardrobe consultation, a hair and makeup makeover, and then some beautiful images created just for her. She came by the studio this week to pick up her certificate and received her complimentary initial consultation. We're excited to see her back in the studio for her upcoming shoot and day of glam! For those of you that didn't win, keep a close eye on your email inbox. Even though we're booked pretty solid for April and the beginning of May, there may be something fun heading your way for having entered. ;-) For now, check out our sessions, we love mother and daughters, girls days out, or a fun day of glam for you to have one day that is just about you, if only for a few hours. :) You can get a better idea what a shoot it like if you click here for a video sample of a mom and daughters day at the studio....!

I think if you’re in business for yourself or in sales for others you have had that thought more than once! Most businesses today, especially those in their first three years of operation, are looking for more opportunities. I’m not a native of this area, I moved here roughly six years ago while thriving in another field in the corporate world. It was a great career but it took me on the road all the time away from my family and kept me from building the relationships I had enjoyed in other places where I was home more frequently. That loss of time with family and friends was one of the key points that made it easier to transition to dedicating myself solely to my photography business. My entire world now exists around creating memories for others to enjoy with their family and friends, allows me to build new relationships, and the bonus is I get to spend time at home with my family every day.

However, I’m now a one woman show, so I had to figure out what made the most sense for my business that would allow me to reach, meet, and expose people to what I have to offer.  My clients tell me all the time that the type of photography that I offer is unique to this area, but if no one knows about me it won’t matter. The biggest way I’ve been able to increase my exposure to new clientele, but also make new friends is to network. Working in outside sales and management for most of my past career made this a no brainer for me. I love to meet new people and I also enjoy collaborating to figure out how we can work together to provide services that will allow our clients to have even better experiences with us.

One of the groups I found to be successful with this is BNI. For those not familiar, BNI (http://www.bni.com/) is an international networking group. I joined over the summer and have found a wonderful group of people all around my area. This group is structured very similarly to what I have been used to in my past corporate experience, they work together in teams known as “chapters” to expand everyone’s reach because you get to know everyone and their businesses very well each week. It was a natural fit for me once I learned more about them.

I wanted to get to get some feedback from the top of our local organization to hear her suggestions on how to be a great networker, so my spotlight today is Jana Cardona, BNI Executive Director for the Mid-South which includes West Tennessee and North Mississippi. This is the link to the group that Jana oversees: (http://www.bnimidsouth.com)

I started by asking Jana how to go about being a good networker. She shared that networking is not a sales tool, it’s about building relationships. You can see why I was attracted to this group! To be a successful networker, she recommended that you sit down and think about your business. Make yourself a list of the following things:

Target Market

  •   Who are they?
  •   Where do they hang out?
  •   What do they do?

If you’re like me, a sole proprietor, you can’t go everywhere. So next Jana recommends that once you have your target market defined you’ll want to then make the following list about yourself and your business:

  •    What do you offer that others don’t?
  •    What is unique about you or your business model?
  •    What are the needs your client has that you can fulfill?
  •    What might your clients say to others that make them think of you?

Next step is to put together what is commonly known as an elevator pitch. Most often when you meet new people they will ask you what you do. When given this opportunity you want understand how to say what you do in an impactful way.

But first, to be a good networker, if given the opportunity Jana recommends that you always ask about the other person first.  The BNI philosophy is called “Givers Gain”. When you give to others they seek to return that to you. This is just a nice thing in general; we’ve all talked to that person that could only talk about themselves. If they ask you first about yourself, you can simply say “I can do that, but let me find out about you first.” It’s much easier to talk to people about what you do once you know what they do. For example, if they tell you that they work with a local jeweler designing pieces for women and you’re a photographer that shoots women, your conversation will flow a little easier!

Once they’ve talked about themselves if they are good networkers they will ask about you too. Knowing what to say that highlights what you offer in your business, in a way that addresses a need that others may have, now becomes essential. I’ve thought about this a lot and for me it is “I am a portrait photographer. I shoot men and women but I specialize in women because most women are generally extremely critical of themselves. I give my clients a uniquely crafted experience that allows them to forget about what they think is wrong with them and come away with beautiful images to celebrate who they are.”

I hope if you’re reading this you have learned a few tips that will allow you to have better success networking. Even if it’s not for your business, hopefully it has given you some thoughts about ways to begin new relationships with others.

Jana has a rich background in not only networking but also speaking to groups about network marketing and sales. If you’re interested in having her come to your group or organization, feel free to reach out to her via email here: jana@bnimidsouth.com. DIY How to Custom Paint Photography Backdrop with Pictures | Z Photog Studio Bartlett, TN http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2014/12/diy-how-to-custom-paint-photography-backdrop-with-pictures-z-photog-studio-bartlett-tn Hi All,

I have a variety of options in terms of backdrops to shoot on, but I also like to experiment with new things. Photographer friends of mine have been posting images of their own DIY backdrops, so I decided to get adventurous over the holiday weekend and see what I could come up with. I also had a chair that I wanted to redo though, so I asked my hubby who has an art degree in painting if he'd mind steering the ship on painting the canvas and spend some time with me in the studio.  He agreed! (I'll post about the chair another day, it's not done yet!)

So here's what we did.  I had this canvas painters backdrop in the studio. I had purchased it previously from Home Depot for an outdoor shoot, I have just been using it as a cushion when someone needed to kneel on the floor.  I think it is 9 ft. x 12 ft., I left the measurements at the studio but I'll update this later with the correct sizing. You can obviously figure out what size will work for your own space.

You can see above that this one has a big seam in the middle, it is actually two pieces that have been sewn together.  So I commenced to separating them as I didn't want to worry about removing the seam from images later on and I thought one half would be plenty big.  (Don't make fun of our old painting clothes, lol!)

It was also very wrinkly since I had just been folding and reusing it over and over as something to sit on. I tried my steamer on it.

That worked a little bit but I soon abandoned it. I would recommend an iron if you've got some heavy folds like you see on the bottom of mine. But I didn't have mine in the studio so we just left it the way it was.  While I was working on this my hubby (Jeff) started mixing paint. I had two gallons with colors I used on accent walls at home that were about half full, so we utilized them.

The first one as you can see if a dark gray/black color. He mixed it with enough water to make it not so think and easier to spread. Then he used a sea sponge that I had from home also. He just worked his way from the top down.  He did spray the canvas area he was about to paint with a water bottle to make sure it would take the paint, he said he thought that might have been unnecessary but he did it anyway since I had read others recommended it.

Once done with this, he went right back in with a bronzey/brown color. Here is a shot of it while wet.

He worked it in where he thought it looked good and would occasionally ask me for my opinion as to where to add or blend in more. He mostly just dabbed it on and smoothed it in where he wanted. He left a little bit of canvas color poking through, after shooting it I think I would have had him remove/blend them out. But I'm pretty happy for our first go round. This project cost me nothing since I had all the materials already on hand.

Here is the final. This is shot with daylight from the window behind me, but it was a rainy day so pretty low light.  Obviously it can be hung from either end, he made one end lighter so I could switch it up if I liked. Image with subject to follow.

One more a little closer....

And here's a selfie with the actual color. Note though for photographers, even though it was daytime, it was very dark outside. My settings were ISO 1250 and f/2.2 which obviously caused both blurring and added grain to the final look. But that's okay!

And since I generally take my processing another step beyond, here's the final with a bit of adjustment to the color and texture of the original.

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed! Happy to answer questions, leave me a comment below if you wish.

Jewelry Trends for fall 2014 | Spotlight Diana Crenshaw of Silpada | Z Photog Studio http://www.zphotog.net/blog/2014/11/jewelry-trends-for-fall-2014-spotlight-diana-crenshaw-of-silpada-z-photog-studio I like to keep up with the latest in jewelry trends since I’m always helping my clients style their looks for their shoots. This week I sat down with Diana Crenshaw who is an independent rep for Silpada. Diana and I are friends, but I asked her to tell me about how she got into the jewelry scene. She’s been a part of the Silpada brand for five years. Initially she joined the company because it offered her flexible hours and an opportunity to earn some extra money for her family. But it quickly turned into a great way to meet new women and develop new friendships. (Guess how I met Diana?!) This is her favorite part of what she does, beautifying all her friends with her services.  (I think we must be peas in a pod, sounds familiar!). She also loves that all their pieces are hand made with 9.25 sterling silver, so she’s providing quality pieces with a lifetime warranty.

Next she walked me through the latest trend, and currently that is mixed metals with pearls.  Silpada refers to this new trend as “street style meets elegance. It’s suitable for everyday wear, but just chic enough to accessorize your little black dress for an evening out.”

I’m a visual person, and since I like to see what something will look like on, Diana brought me some samples. In this image all of the elements hanging are one versatile piece with exception of the “Be Strong” pendant.  The main piece is a blend of brass, sterling silver, and real fresh water pearls. I love the blend and options that this piece provides. My clients are always looking for the perfect piece for their shots, and having this many in one is certainly an advantage:

Trend Alert! You can wear this one statement piece, and it looks as if you have layered many separate pieces together. This is all the rage in the jewelry world these days.  The cool thing is that if you have this one piece, you also can pull strands off and have what seems like an unlimited supply of looks.  Here is one with a new set of earrings, plus watch and bracelets:

…and another with the addition of different bracelets and a ring.  All are from this mixed metal family so can be worn together.

The cool thing about Silpada is like some other types of businesses, you can host a party, invite your friends, and you can earn some pieces for yourself. With Christmas fast approaching, what a great way to get some of your shopping done without ever leaving your home! And I’ve got my eye on a few pieces too, so let me know if you want to get together <wink>!

If you do have some interest, you can reach out to Diana directly on her website at http://www.mysilpada.com/diana.crenshaw

She'll bring a little or a lot to you....

Just tell her I sent you! :) Thanks Diana!
